1. Task 1 - Culture And Social Perspectives

Culture refers to the beliefs, customs and traditions followed by individuals which impact the society as a whole. People’s behaviours and beliefs are greatly influenced by cultures and this is the reason why culture is vital element to the social perspectives. Culture has a big say on how people react under different circumstances. They not only take care of how people communicate but also what do they say, whether they keep calm or become agitated, every little detail is influenced by Culture. Ultimately these behavioural patterns impact the society in each and every step. People’s outlook towards the society is also built through the culture. Society gets impacted greatly by the kind of culture, people possess. The base of the society is built on the kind of culture people possess (Durey et al. 2012).

2. Task 2 - Aboriginal Cultural Orientation Package

The Aboriginal Cultural Orientation Package deals with the understanding that a number of health professionals have very little or almost no knowledge of the cultural values which Aboriginal people possess (Head 2017). The poor understanding which the health professionals have of the cultural values of people of the Aboriginal community, has a significant impact on how the professionals have a lack of respect for people of that region, which ultimately lead to a gap in communication. The package was introduced by Western Australia Country Health Services and Disability Services Commission, in order to develop the need for understanding the culture and develop a two-way communication process for the health professionals (Adams, Drew and Walker, 2014). The various aspects, which if looked in detail, can help health professionals deal with the Aboriginals better, are:

  1. a) Culture, self and diversity-

Understanding culture of the Aboriginals, on the basis of how they behave, their beliefs, the way they react, will go a long way in helping professionals to treat the patients better. Similarly, professionals should also look to mould themselves in order to have a clear picture of what and how things are, in this particular community (Johnston 2013). Moreover, the diversity of culture needs to be respected by the professionals and that would pave the way for better treatment.

  1. b) Aboriginal History-

The next important thing which needs attention from the health professionals is to develop the curiosity for gathering knowledge about the history of the Aboriginals. The fact that people of this community believes in staying together and perform activities should be clearly understood. Since the invasion of Australia by the Europeans, the Aboriginals have been forced to live in a territory, completely unknown to them and struggled for existence (Attwood et al. 2015). They mainly stayed on the foreshores of harbour, where they looked for food, hunted in waters and along the unknown remote region, harvested food from the surrounding bushy areas. The Aboriginals have been mostly self-sufficient in nature, due to which they never really needed to travel far and wide for work, since the available resources were abundant and had developed good trading relations with other tribal groups.

  1. c) Working With Aboriginal People-

Whenever any professional needs to work with Aboriginal People in a successful manner, building rapport with the community is the most important criteria they need to take into consideration (Lowe and Yunkaporta 2013). Rapport can only be built by establishing connections with the right kind of people. Communication plays a big part in understanding people’s culture and the perspectives which they have of the society. The cultural and historical factors need to be acknowledged by all those willing to work with the Aboriginals. Greater understanding of their background would put people in a better situation to appreciate the factors which impact the communities and make them realize how they can go ahead and work with the people of that region in the future.

  1. d) Providing Clinical Services-

Aboriginal Health, which has a statewide office within Western Australia Health, facilitates through collaboration and by taking a coordinated approach within the Western Australia Health’s public health system. They seek to improve health outcomes for all those Aboriginal people staying in the western part of Australia. The strategic policy and planning role of Aboriginal Health seeks:

  1. To promote the fact that everyone should be concerned about Aboriginal Health and thereby encourages the need to get Aboriginal business embedded into Western Australia Health for framing key policies and planning (McGaw and Pieris 2014).
  2. Encourages best practice to be implemented in an innovative and culturally secure manner all across WA Health (Brands 2014).
  • To support a financially sustainable healthcare system with the focus on preventive health and wellbeing of people.
  1. To increase career, consumer and community involvement for Aboriginal people, for ensuring enhancement of access and delivery of appropriate health services in line with their culture.
  2. e)  Improving Cultural Security-

Cultural security can only be improved by way of bringing improvements in the cultural understanding within the Western Australia Healthcare System. These improvements can only happen by relaxing the service design for better reach, respond efficiently to the social aspects related to handling obligations from families and the assumptions on their socioeconomic status (Parker and Milroy 2014). All these help in empowering people and narrow down the gaps in cultural understanding, thereby create rapport and trust. Understanding the culture of any community is the first and foremost thing which people should understand and abide by the customs to develop clarity in communication, thereby make them feel secured.

3. Task 3 – Research And Reflect On The Culture Of Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People In Relation To Aboriginal Community Organization Of Balgo

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a very complex and diverse culture with a strong sense of belonging. The indigenous culture of Australia are the oldest living cultural history in the world, dating back to more than 50000 years.

There are lots of similarities between Balgo and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander:

  1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have within themselves a strong sense of belonging for the country. Similar is the case of Balgo Community (Fredericks 2013).
  2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have a deep understanding of cultural and spiritual values. People of Balgo also possess a strong connection to the culture and country (Ware 2013).
  3. From the cultural point of views, both the communities are sound and are very particular about preserving their culture.

The glaring contrast comes up when comparison is drawn between their populations. According to The Australian Bureau of Statistics, the total population of the Aboriginals in Australia is around 6.6 lakh, whereas the Balgo is a small Aboriginal Community comprising of only 500 people.
