Discuss about the Methodology and Methods.

Answer:

Introduction:

The research process is carried out in a particular manner following a predetermined set of steps, which is known as research methodology. It is one of the important components of research as it determines the nature of the research and the quality of data analysis in order to derive the required outcome. This key concept exercise would perform deep analysis of the methodologies used in the two articles and underline the advantages as well as disadvantages of both.

Discussion

The first case

study based on “Managing the human resource in Indian SME” adopted an interesting method

ology (Saini and Budhwar 2008). It aimed to construct a case study which would be based on the people management practices of the concerned firm- Flaxo Exports. The methods of data collection were phone interviews and informal discussions with the employees. The other methods of data collection were in-depth interviews (using semi structured questionnaires), which helped the researcher to determine the realities of the human resource management and cross check the positions of the owners of the respective companies. There were total 11 interviews conducted and there were informal discussions with four employees.

The paradigm used in this case study was “interpretivism” in which the researchers investigate with the concerned samples. The qualitative method of data collection was used in which the researchers interacted with the managers, CEO and other employees of the organization. The advantages of qualitative research includes that it provides powerful data as the concerned issues are evaluated in detail from a people’s perspective (Mertens 2014). It helps the researchers gain a clear understanding of the problem situation and understand the complexities involved. The disadvantages of this type of research are that the data interpretation process is time consuming and the data gathering becomes troublesome (Mertens 2014). This type of data collection relies heavily on the researcher which is often influenced by personal biases and idiosyncrasies.

The second case study on “relationship between human resource management practices and organizational commitment” uses the quantitative data collection procedures. The interviews were performed with the managers in a sample size of 250 people (ÅžendoÄŸ du Kocabicak and Güven 2013). The number of the correspondents was statistically significant. The data analysis tools, such as SPSS 15, were used to analyze the results.

The paradigm used in this case study was “positivism” as the researcher derived relevant information from the mathematical or logical proof, by gathering suitable statistical information. The researcher used quantitative data collection methods to understand the “manufacturing and human resources fit” and used various tools such as Likert Scales for this purpose. The advantages of this type of research are that it uses precise numerical data which is collected in relatively less time (Mertens 2014). The testing hypothesis is proposed before the data collection process. The main disadvantage is that this type of research often causes structural bias due to the use of standardized questions. This type of research fails to consider the aspect of human perception as it is concerned on the numerical figures (Mertens 2014).

I would use “mixed research methods” for the purpose of my research as it utilizes both the quantitative and the qualitative methods. This is considered as the best method of research. It can provide a good base for evaluation as the limitations of one form of data can be balanced by the strengths of the other form of data (Creswell 2013). The understanding can also be enhanced by the integration of different methods of knowledge exploration. It is feasible to adopt a combination of both the methods for the betterment of the research.

The mixed research methods indicates a high level of complexity, however, they can be handled through efficient planning. The tasks should be segregated and the research methods that should be applied to each of the tasks should be identified. For example, Task A should be done through qualitative research while Task C would be analyzed through quantitative data. This type of planned segregation of the tasks would imply efficient fulfillment of the research objectives. I must be aware of the limitations of each method and should try to utilize the positive aspects of the methods. I must be clear of my purpose, focus and basis of the research methodology. I should use appropriate coding from the qualitative methods of data collection. This way I can make sure that the research process is successful and provides immense contribution to the respective field.

Conclusion

This paper presents a good understanding of the methodology used in the various researches. The analysis helped to determine the best possible data collection method to be used in future studies.
