A crime is an offence which is worth the society punishment and condemnation mostly by through imprisonment and fines imposition. Deviance is violation of norms of a society. Most of deviant acts do not violate the law. Also, the individual cannot be charged over a criminal violation.
Thus to deviate is to commit an act which is not taken normal or standard.
All criminals are deviant but not all deviants’ acts are crimes. This is because deviant changes from one region to another hence norm has a specific assignment which is connotative to the region and also the region it was brought up (Feeley, Malcolm, and Jonathan Simon 450). This is not the case in crime as it is a something which is done against the law set for that region.
An example of a deviant act is cross dressing. This is because in all parts of the world is taken to be wrong not because it is crime in nature but because it does not follow the cultural norms of that society or country. This act is punishable in the society but not by the law.
An example of act that is punishable by law but not deviance is substance abuse. People abuse drugs out of their own decision (Kappeler, Victor, and Gary 10). However, the law prohibits substance abuse to the extent of arresting people associated with the behavior. In the society, substance abuse is seen to be a major contributing factor to societal problems. Therefore, although substance abuse is not necessarily deviance, it is considered a crime in the society thus punishable.
