Referencing is a method or a procedure that appreciates the book, article, website, or any other material that an individual has used in their writing paper, essay, thesis, or any personal document. And a referencing style depicts the particular way to write and give appreciation for the information that an individual has cited in their paper. There is a variety of referencing style that depicts a particular way of referencing. Every source of information has a different referencing style. For example, there is a different style and method to write a reference whose source information has been cited from a book, and similarly, a different style is offered for a journal, website, newspaper, and many more. The reference needs to be acknowledged to avoid plagiarism.

In-text, the citation includes Author and date in the background whereas the footnotes display the number in the text and further details but at the bottom of the page. MLA CITING

The major update that has been included in the 8th edition is the addition of the universal MLA format. Earlier there used to be different formats for different sources, now an individual can use a single universal format for every variant source. The Standard MLA format allows scholars and researchers to concentrate more on writing skills rather than searching for different formats. Another broad update that needs to be noticed is the addition of the container. A container denotes the source originality. The usage of the URL is also increasing in the citation. Location is no longer used in the format of MLA.

CITING BASIC

There are two formats used in the MLA citations and these are.

  • In-text Citation

MLA in-text citation includes the author's surname and the page number from where the information has been cited or paraphrased. For example (Junita 765). And it is not necessary to use the page number, if the citation does include the page number, then it can be written with the author’s surname only.

Example: Aristotle (1876)

  • Full-Text Citation

MLA Full Citation cover all the detail of the author. The Format of the Full citation goes like Author Surname, first name.” title”. Container, other contributors, edition, numbers, publisher, date, and location.

Example:

MLA Full-Text Citation

DIFFERENT FORMAT FOR DIFFERENT SOURCES OF INFORMATION

The list of the citation should be noted down at the end of the content written on a fresh page. And there should be a central heading named Works Cited or References. The reference list should display the citation in alphabetical order. If there is anonymous content, then the title of the text must be added, and inappropriate articles should be ignored by alphabetically addressing them. For adding the dates in a particular order, remember to use the only style of date. Such as, either uses 22 July 1887 or (July 22, 1887). Using a single way in reference would help to arrange in alphabetical order. Either use italic or underline the name of the publisher. When a reference is jotted down by the typewriter, it lacks the italics option. Therefore, they underline the name of the publisher. The use of hanging Indentation in MLA wiring style is considerate. MLA citation should use hanging indentation and the first line is left out and the rest should be indented by ½.

MLA Citation

Use of Capitalization, Abbreviation, and Punctuation

The MLA guidelines clearly state the use of capitalization. It says that use capital letters in the starting, ending, and with other principal words, and the ones that use hyphen should also be in hyphen and abbreviations are used to devote certain things like vol for volume, ed for edition.
