Identifying use cases is an important step when trying to provide a comprehensive understanding of functional requirements within a system. It makes it easy to identify the different interactions between the user and the system within an environment. In our chapter reading we were introduced to two different techniques that can be used for identifying use cases. These techniques were user goal technique, and event decomposition technique. Upon further research I was able to find a third technique which is create, report, update and delete (CRUD).

User goal technique is a use case that analyst uses to identify ways to improve the system so that users may use the system more efficiently, and effectively. “The analyst first identifies all the users, categorizes them by user type, and then conducts a structured interview with each user. By focusing on one type of user at a time, the analyst can systematically address the problem of identifying use cases” (Satzinger, Jackson, & Stephen, 2016).

Event decomposition technique in a use case is focused on identifying the events that a system is expected to respond to and then deciding how the system should respond.  “Starting with business events helps the analyst define each use case at the appropriate level of detail” (Satzinger, Jackson, & Stephen, 2016). When doing so the analyst can focus on the input and results and how the system interacts with users. This use case is one that correlates with Christian beliefs. Each day we are faced with situations that requires us to respond. As Christians no matter the circumstances we are expected to respond in a godly fashion. “Servant’s be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust” (1 Peter 2:18 EVS).

CRUD is another important technique that is used to validate and evaluate use cases. CRUD is generally used in database management to Create, Report, Update and Delete data. “The analyst identifies all the data elements to be processed by the system and creates use cases that create, report on, update, and delete the data items” (BA Techniques, 2013)

The best technique fit for my application Secure Connect would be the event decomposition technique. My application requires users to input information in order to connect to an online group meeting. Based on the information provided into specific fields such as the Session ID being one of many, is a series of numbers, that will require the system to respond. Based on the input the user will either have a successful result that allows the user to move forward or if the numbers are incorrect an error message will display with the necessary instructions. In addition, user goal technique will also be beneficial to my application because the base of it requires user interaction. It will allow users to give feedback and or suggestions to make the system more user friendly to those who may not be tech savvy.
