Hist 5469 Civil Rights Movement Assessment Answer

Civil Rights Movement

The two principal women characters who have been discussed in the seventh chapter of Theoharis’ book entitled “A More Beautiful and Terrible History The Uses and Misuses of Civil Rights History” are the characters of Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King (Theoharis, 2018). These women are portrayed by the author to have different mindsets. The mindset of Rosa Parks is considered to be that of a matriarch who has been involved in the civil rights movement in a manner that provides a proper lead to the civil rights movement that has been raging within the boundaries of the United States. However, Parks had also been relentlessly referred to as a woman who was not angry. She was referred to be a soft-spoken and quiet lady. The other woman who had been discussed within the chapter is the character of Coretta Scott King. Coretta Scott King, as compared to Rosa Parks has always been consistently described as beautiful, kind, gentle and obedient (Shi & Tindall, 2016). The myths that have been discussed within the seventh chapter and the book in total are those that are related to the position of the women within the then society.

The women were considered to have been eligible only to be the supporters of their husbands. However, this myth has been debunked by Theoharis. The author states that the women who have been discussed in this chapter were active participants and supporters of economic justice and peace during their lifetimes. The author indicates that the then governmental bodies often attempted to deter the women from the participation within the social issues that have been raging within the concerned society (Lawson, 2014). The civil rights movement within the concerned society were known to be influenced by the colors of sexuality. The author specifically discusses the fact that the introduction of sexuality within the civil rights movement, however, did not deter the women from taking part in the social movement. The life of Coretta Scott King as described by the author has been important due to the highly active nature of the concerned lady. The society at large is encouraged to remember her as a perfect mate to her husband and not as an activist of the civil rights movement within the country.

According to the Youtube (2018), the people were entrusted with the right to vote by the constitution of the country. The women were generally not granted the rights to vote. The activists of the civil rights movement over a long period of history had fought violently against the then governmental setup in order to acquire the equality among all the residents of the society. The women rights commission within the United States were derived from the teachings of the Holy Bible that states that both men and women were created to stand on an equal footing and thus the women should be granted equal rights of voting as well. The Women Rights Movement of the country began in the year 1848 during the Seneca Falls Convention in the United States. Thus, began the journey of equality and the access to the voting rights of the women who have been residing within the given political territories of the United States
