Communicating effectively in the workplace not only helps efficiency but can also have positive effects for yourself. I believe whenever sending an email or just having a conversation with a boss or subordinates, its important to focus on what you are saying, how you’re saying it and how they receive it. The videos were very beneficial on addressing certain things you can do to improve on those three actions.

In todays fast paced society people often do not take the time to effectively listen to what’s being said. Its common for someone to interject mid sentence or stop listening after a certain time. Making sure to pause after someone has said something is a good tip to overcome this off-putting habit. By pausing it will ensure you have heard everything the other is trying to say. It also gives you time to respond intelligently. This is an important tip for anyone in a manager position. Effectively listening to problems someone has helps build the trust between the two people. With this trust the subordinate knows you will do your best to solve whatever issue is at hand. It’s also important when communicating with someone of authority. Listening to instructions correctly will ensure proper execution. Being able to respond to these instructions or questions intelligently also reflects positively on you.

At my current job my colleagues and myself communicate mostly through email. Often people will respond or initiate emails much like a text message. This is a very bad habit and can reflect negatively on the originator. I ensure that every email I send is well written and is respectful to whomever it is going to. I make a point to greet the person at the beginning before writing the message. The body has proper pronunciation and complete sentences that are detailed. And I make sure to always end with a positive and respectful gesture before closing it with my name. Its important to me that every email is formatted like this no matter who it goes to. By doing this I establish a certain impression about myself that doesn’t falter.  

Communicating effectively and properly can have many benefits in the workplace. Often this is the only form of representation of yourself to certain people within the workplace. By making sure you do everything right ensures a positive view from everyone around and can influence others to do the same.
